CULTURAL HERITAGE

Discover the history of our territory

SPANISH TOWERS

Between the 16th and 17th centuries, the Spanish Royal Crown built the Tower of San Giovanni, Torre Vecchia (Tower of San Marco), and the Tower of the Seu (Turr’e Seu) along the coast of Sinis. Like other coastal towers of Sardinia, these were erected to protect local populations against invasions by pirates and Barbary corsairs from North Africa.

CHURCH OF SAN SALVATORE AND HYPOGEUM

The church dedicated to Jesus the Saviour was built at the end of the 17th century in the area of the hypogeic sanctuary which up until then had served as a subterranean church. The ancient hypogeum is accessed via a stairway that opens up in the floor of the church and leads to a small compartment with five rooms branching off of it.

CUCCURU IS ARRIUS ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

The pre-Nuragic site of Cuccuru Is Arrius, discovered while digging the spillway canal of the lagoon, is located on the south western banks of the Pond of Cabras. The archaeological surveys conducted between 1976 and 1980 documented an intense human presence in the site from the mid-Neolithic period (5th millennium BC). The villages built in the site have residential structures that are sunken into the ground, bounded and covered with plant materials. Within the site there is a necropolis and various settlements from the Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Punic ages, as well as a Nuragic well temple with an annexed late-Republican worship area and, finally, a Roman-Imperial necropolis.

THARROS ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

Tharros was established at the end of the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians on an area that had previously been settled by Nuragic peoples. It is located at the southernmost tip of the Sinis Peninsula, within the Gulf of Oristano. With the arrival of the Romans, in 238 BC, a large number of structures were built, whose remains can still be admired.

MONT’E PRAMA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

The necropolis of Mont’e Prama is located in the Cabras region, along provincial road n.7 which leads from S.Salvatore to Riola Sardo. The funerary area was randomly discovered in 1974 while the field was being ploughed. Since then various digs and restorations have taken place, between 1975 and 1979 and, more recently, between 2014 and 2017. The statues of the “Giants” are sculpted in local sandstone and vary in height from 2 to 2.5 metres. As of today 28 statues have been identified, all depicting male characters and representing the warrior, the archer, and the boxer, but the reason for these sculptures remains a mystery.

G. MARONGIU CIVIC MUSEUM

The “Giovanni Marongiu” Civic Museum, since 1997, is dedicated to the exhibition of archaeological artefacts primarily from the Cuccuru is Arrius site, Tharros, and the Mal di Ventre ruins. On 22 March 2014 the room dedicated to the statuary complex of Mont’e Prama was opened, in which a selection of male statues is on display, six in total (three boxers, two archers, and one warrior), as well as four models of nuraghe.

Mari Ermi

After turning to the Mari Ermi beach, continue along an internal road that passes through farmed fields, where the natural colours change depending on the season, from green to yellow to the colour of earth. There are ample parkings, a simple refreshment area two bar-restaurants and two structures with public restrooms. It is very popular among aficionados of water sports and those who practice kite surfing.
